Air Powered Car

Air powered cars are fun to build and even more fun to play with. In this project, students will be challenged to build and test their own Air powered car. Air powered car consists of four main parts: 1. The body of the car
2. The wheels of the car
3. The axles, which connect the wheels to the body, and allow the wheels to spin
4. Balloon
How it Works? When you blown up a balloon and then let it go, The air rapidly escapes from the balloon, making it zip all over the room. This is because when you blow up a balloon, you increase the air pressure inside the balloon. This air pressure stretches out the rubber balloon material, just like stretching a rubber band. Both the air pressure and the stretched rubber store potential energy, or energy that is "waiting" to do something.
When you let the balloon go, the rubber contracts, and air is rapidly squeezed out the opening of the balloon. The potential energy inside the balloon is converted to kinetic energy, or energy of motion, of the fast-moving air through the opening. Because the air is pushed out rapidly back wards, a reaction force pushes the balloon forward. This principle comes from Newton's third law of motion, which states "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."
When you just let a balloon go on its own, it tends to randomly fly around the room, and is almost impossible to steer. However, when you attach the balloon to a car, you can harness the balloon's energy to propel the car forward. The engineering goal in this project will be to design, build, and test a car that is powered by nothing but a balloon.

What you need to make your 4-Wheel Air Powered Car Jet:

Balloon
Flexible straw
Rubber band or tape
Body (Select one):
Water bottle
Juice box
Disposable cup (paper or plastic)
Ice cream container (pint or quart)
Cardboard sheet
Axles (Select one):
Straws
Chopsticks
Spokes
Wheels (Select one):
Toy wheel
Bottle caps
Evaluation of Team’s Performance
By conducting following tests we can rate the Balloon Car,
1. Slope Test
2. Circle Track test (For a Given Diameter)
3. Flat Test
4. Jumping Test

INSTRUCTION

  • For a Team maximum of 3 Members allowed
  • Duration for making balloon car 45 minutes
  • Each team will be provided by 3 Balloons and Two set of wheels

PAPER FLYER EVENT

Part 1:
1. Students explore the stations and hypothesize which one(s) will travel the furthest and/or have the fanciest flight
2. Their hypothesis should be based on what they have learned about the four forces of flight.
Part 2:
1. Hand out the materials to the students.
2. Each student is to design and build their own paper aircraft, keeping in mind the four forces affecting flight.
3. Two awards will be given:
1) the furthest distance travelled;
2) the high Endurance flight. 4. Students are allowed to make up to 2 airplanes but only 1 can be entered into the contest. No other sheets of paper will be handed out.
5. Allow 30 minutes for design and building and 15 minutes for testing.
Extensions

  • Explain how you accounted for each of the four forces of flight while building your model.
  • What could you do differently?
  • How do rudders, elevators, and ailerons change the plane’s direction?
  • How could you incorporate these different features into your design?
Objectives
  • Determine how manipulating the design of aircraft changes the size and direction of flight forces and link those changes to changes in the aircraft’s motion.
  • Explain how the drag force is created and what factors affect its size and direction.
Materials
  • Per student:
  • 3 sheets of paper (preferably A4 size)
  • scissors
  • glue or tape
  • markers (for decoration)
  • paper clip (optional)
    Evaluation
  • RANGE (Longest Distance Travelled)
  • ENDURANCE (Longest Airtime)

Rules & Regulations

  • All contests need to be held indoor without any wind.
  • Paper planes must only be constructed out of one piece of paper handed out at the venue: standard A4 format, not more than 100 grams. The sheet must be modified by folding only! No ripping, gluing, cutting, stapling or ballasting is allowed!
  • Paper planes have to be built at site with the provided official paper.
  • The aircraft must be launched by one person throwing the aircraft unaided from behind a straight launch line marked on the floor. Passing over the launch line leads to disqualification.
  • Touching the launch line or any point beyond during the launch, leads to an invalid attempt. After completion of the launch, the thrower may move beyond the launch line.
  • Two trials per participant are allowed. Different planes can be used, the better attempt counts.
  • The LONGEST DISTANCE will be measured in m/mm.
  • The aircraft must be launched by one person throwing the aircraft unaided from a reasonably static position. The participant needs to have both feet firm on the ground during the attempt. A run-up or fast walk as part of the launch is not permitted, nor the use of ramps or like devices.
  • Two trials per participant are allowed. Different planes can be used, the better attempt counts.
  • Decisive for measurement are the moments when the paper plane leaves the hand and first time hits the ground or any object. Results are counted in tenth of seconds.
